We are acting as the Lead Architect for SkillX, a massive cohort-based tech learning platform. We sell premium tech bootcamps for ₹50,000 each.
- The Split: The platform takes a 10% cut (₹5,000). The Tutor receives 90% (₹45,000).
The CEO of SkillX is facing massive tutor churn to competitors. To drive immediate hyper-growth and aggressively acquire top tutors, the Sales and Marketing teams have made two conflicting promises:
- The Tutor Promise (T0 Instant Payouts): "The minute a student buys your course, you get the ₹45,000 instantly in your bank account."
- The Student Promise (7-Day Refunds): "Try the bootcamp risk-free with a '7-Day No-Questions-Asked Refund Policy'. Cancel on Day 6 and instantly get your ₹50,000 back."
The CEO demands that the engineering team wires an entirely automated Payment Aggregator (PA) Route system to execute both of these promises simultaneously.
The Trap: Violating the 5 Immutable Modalities
A Junior engineering team says "Yes" and builds the APIs. A week later, the company is bankrupt.
By attempting to fulfill both promises without architectural guardrails, the CEO has fundamentally violated Modality 1: The Fund Routing Modality and Modality 3: The Liability & Risk Modality.
The Federal Law Violation
Initially, SkillX routed the ₹50,000 directly into their corporate checking account at ICICI Bank, planning to wire the money out at the end of the month. By accepting third-party seller funds, holding them, and redistributing them later without an RBI Payment Aggregator license, SkillX is engaged in illegal co-mingling of funds. Under a PSS Act audit, this creates account-freeze, enforcement, and business-continuity risk.
The Infinite Treasury Bleed
If we move to an automated PA, but follow the CEO's instructions blindly:
- Day 1: Student pays ₹50,000. It lands in the PA. We split it and instantly execute an outbound routing physical transfer of ₹45,000 to the Tutor's personal bank account. SkillX keeps ₹5,000.
- Day 6: The student hates the course and clicks "Cancel".
The API attempts to refund ₹50,000 to the student's credit card. Where does the capital come from? The Nodal Escrow for this specific transaction is empty; the ₹45,000 successfully settled to the Tutor five days ago. The platform cannot magically reach into the Tutor’s personal SBI bank account and retrieve the cash. The Payment Gateway will automatically deduct the ₹50,000 refund out of the platform's central Escrow reserve. SkillX has just lost ₹45,000 of its own corporate treasury on a single transaction.
If a bad-actor Tutor sells 100 courses and tells all 100 students to cancel on Day 6, SkillX bleeds ₹45 Lakhs in one week, and the Tutor keeps the cash.
️ The Architectural Decision
A defensive Architect tells the CEO: "We cannot do 7-day refunds if we do T0 payouts. We must delay the physical settlement to T+7." This destroys the CEO's marketing strategy.
A Growth-Obsessed Architect tells the CEO: "Yes, we can build it, but we have to engineer an aggressive financial safety net."
